Grizzly 399, Queen of the Tetons, passed October 22, 2024. She was struck by a vehicle. The whereabouts of her single cub is currently unknown. Since arriving in the Tetons around 2006, she raised some 18 cubs, often near the Park's roadways in flower-filled meadows that provided sanctuary from boars that would otherwise have sought to kill her cubs but which shunned the crowds she drew. I first saw her more than 15 years ago and almost every year since. Her fame spread and thousands traveled every year to see this great bear who became the quintessential symbol of the Tetons, the great wild and a reminder of the critical need for conservation. Over the years I have shared many images of her. Here is a collection of photographs of Grizzly 399, Queen of the Tetons, ranging from 2010 to earlier this year.
