Photos of Patagonia - the southern expanse of the Andes mountains that straddles Argentina and Chile. It is a stunning region of soaring granite peaks, turquoise lakes, boulder-filled moraines, glaciers and weather that changes by the hour. For two weeks in March 2024, I hiked in Torres Del Paine National Park, Glaciares National Park with the great Chalten or Monte Fitz Roy and nearby Huehmules Conservation District. Here are just a few of my favorite photosfrom this trip. A more complete set of images from Patagonia can be found on the Gallery page.

Follow a day hike hand camp, an early hike in the dark, up nearly a mile of steep boulder-climbing, brings the elusive reward of sunrise on Fitz Row - if the weather cooperates!

When the clouds finally cleared, there was a visceral reaction to the moving spectacle of Fitz Roy and her adjoining peaks and needles rising higher and higher into the the cold blue Argentinian sky, draped in never-ending glaciers and snow. This is why I traveled 6000 miles to experience moments like this.

For a few brief moments, the Cuernos or horns of Torres Del Pain, located between the peaks of Paine Grande and the Torres towers, are painted in pastels of pink and purple.

A spectacular, wind-swept lake lies below the Cuernos mountains of Torres Del Paine.

As the rains gradually cleared, the temperatures were noticeably cooler. There was a hint of autumn and even winter on the wind, as the early change in the leaves of the lenga trees nearby was a warning that winter was not far off.

Our journey to Lago del Desierto was broken up with a great stop at this beautiful small waterfall, made all the more enchanting by a steady rain that seemed to epitomize the Patagonian experience.

In the cold blue light of pre-dawn, the Fitz Roy towers rise higher and higher, ready to catch the very first rays of a new morning. Glaciers hang from these peaks and there is only the sound of the never-ending wind that sweeps constantly across these high peaks in Patagonia's southern Andes.

Grey Glacier features several significant lobes. Here, its largest lobe seems hunkered down below yet another advancing storm.

Sunrise at the base of Fitz Roy is truly one of the most stunning vistas in the world,
