Bruno Impression
Fatherhood means so many different things to so many. I was shaped by a man who dared and challenged me to dream, to not accept easy answers or the easy way. I miss him dearly every day. When I saw this great male bear a few days ago in the Tetons, known to have fathered many of the bears there, I was taken by the raw power and aura, the sense of invincibility but also passing time; the encounter was brief, almost shadowy. Here is Bruno.

A Mother's Cry
The meadows this time of year are filled with flowers and great wildlife. Spring is in the air and the young are finding their legs. But on this afternoon, the most beloved and known grizzly in all the world has entered the forest and with her inceccable scent found the newborn elk, on which she and her cub will feed for the next few hours. Mom has retreated to the meadow where she looks and calls repeatedly to her young baby to come forth. But there is only silence. For nearly a day she stands and parades and cries her bawl. Life in the wild is not all cuteness and smiles; it is a day by day struggle to stay alive.

Guardians of the Flat
The meadow seems quiet and empty but a closer examination explains why: at the back of the meadow two grizzlies are on high alert and looking for food.
