Full Moon Rise Over Trayfoot Mountain Overlook

Shenandoah National Park

After an afternoon photographing and really studying this mountain bald at Trayfoot Mountain Overlook, I decided I had to return at dusk to see if there might be just enough light to reveal the colors of the foliage as a not quite full moon rose over a nearby ridge. The challenge was finding a composition where I could also capture the ghostly specter of a dead oak tree. When I returned the moon was just below the ridge and seemed likely to be obscured by clouds. Twenty minutes later, there was a momentary break in the clouds revealing the moon before it had climbed too high in the sky, and I had my image. Photo © copyright by Ed Fuhr.
