The trail began under a black sky and a billion stars. Dawn was hours away. The hike was long and up. And up. And up. Higher and higher we climbed. In the darkness. Through the woods, across the boulders, past where the trails disappeared. We arrived, alone, as the sun first reached this frozen alpine lake, high atop the Grand Tetons, with the silence and solitude punctuated only by the occasional crack of expanding ice.
